[00:06.25]To pursue a career in music [00:09.21]Chris realized that he would have to move to London [00:11.83]So in 1996, he enrolled at University College London and studied history [00:17.55]That's where he met future band members [00:19.95]Will, John and Guy [00:23.13]Most of our friends, people said (?) [00:26.24]Same mates, same mates they always said [00:27.78]Yeah... [laughters] [00:34.24]I don't think it's all uncommon [00:35.86]For bands to originate at school [00:38.16]Because like America and Great Britain alike [00:41.50]This happens all the time [00:43.95]Because I think especially a university [00:46.53]Because for the first time [00:48.49]You're completely surrounded by people [00:50.71]The alike minded, their searching for similar things [00:55.08]You know, you've got other talent and musicians around you [00:58.34]But yet you're completely secured in the face [01:00.62]In a sense that you're on campus or whatever [01:04.55]You've got some source of support from family [01:07.07]But yet you're on your own for the first time [01:10.55]The four of them were all housed in the same building [01:12.70]Although they were studying very different subject [01:15.46]They all shared a passion for music [01:18.16]And London gave them the perfect playing ground [01:20.79]To see what other bands were out there [01:22.94]Whenever possible [01:24.12]They were going to gigs [01:25.51]I can understand why Chris Martin went to London to form the band [01:29.03]Because (?) companies are there, record companies are there [01:32.94]All the big bands play there [01:35.17]You know, if you wanna see any band that you like [01:39.11]It's always better to go off and see it in London [01:41.31]Because no in doubt that they'll always be on tour [01:44.85]They were always gonna threw this [01:46.19]It was always a good idea to go out there [01:48.07]Plus, the fact you got people living there [01:49.55]You wanna be in bands and wanna make it big [02:02.25]London's like this perfect setting [02:04.84]For the music industry to really, you know, explode [02:08.37]Because you've got such a diversity, you know [02:12.80]Diversity of culture [02:14.17]It's like the culture of center for the world, you know [02:16.64]There's so much going on [02:18.33]If you wanna go to Reggae gate, you go to Reggae gate [02:21.68]If you wanna go to like a guitar base gate [02:23.72]You go to that [02:24.86]You can go to whatever kind of music you wanna go to [02:32.86]London's a great place for music [02:35.48]Probably the capital city of music [02:36.90]No matter what style that you're into [02:39.11]Be Punk, Goth, Indie, Rock [02:41.26]There's always clubs and places to play [02:43.97]There's all those venues and market, the stores, and the (?) [02:47.90]Also lots of pubs, have nice bands playing [02:51.41]It's at these where you can meet people [02:53.72]Or often into forming bands as well [02:55.65]When they were not studying [02:57.71]They would go to watch bands [02:59.78]Guy and John would hang out in Chris's room [03:02.23]And together they would write songs [03:04.46]A lot of the material that would end up on the band's first album [03:07.35]Came together here [03:09.54]They wrote hundreds of songs [03:10.98]Before finally picking with tracks [03:12.70]Which would become world-wide hits [03:16.16]To sit down with a group of peple, like [03:17.49]If you intended to go out and, like [03:20.39]Join a band and have a successful career within that band [03:25.24]I mean, starting from a point where you'll just sort of sit down [03:29.25]And have a jam with someone [03:30.73]I think it's more than important, it's vital [03:34.80]Which is why so many bands successful that come out of university [03:37.89]Because they've had the opportunity in a time [03:42.57]To just sit down together, relax, have a smoke, you know [03:46.99]Just sit and jam [03:48.21]And just pick each other's brains [03:49.69]And I think when you do that [03:51.65]And you get yourself in that sort of situation [03:54.49]The more you just sort of work with it and it just evolves
